Sarasvati: the joy of chanting (mantra singing)
The art of chanting
My spiritual awakening began at the age of 33. At that time I didn’t know anything about spirituality but it would soon become the purpose of my life. A year and a half later I did my first spiritual retreat. I felt at home for the first time in my life. Although I come from a musical family I didn’t know I was a good singer, but during that first retreat all of a sudden I could sing anything I wanted: high, low, harmonics, counter melodies, you name it. It was such a joy to be able to sing freely. Soon after that I joined the musicians group that did the chanting, first as a guitar player and singer, lateron also as keyboard and djembé player and as a composer.
That’s where I learned the art of chanting.
I’ve been with this spiritual group, led by a mantra yogi, for 12 years. After that I formed my own chanting group called chant group Jaya Ram and played all over the Netherlands, like in Almere, Den Haag, Eindhoven, Utrecht, Leeuwarden and Lelystad. I also kept on composing chants. This chant group had several incarnations over the years, with different musicians and singers; all of them brought in their own energy and expertise and it was always a joy to sing and play and celebrate.
After some wanderings along other spiritual groups (mostly theosophical ones) the Journey became my new home. When I did the Journey Practitioner Program I ran into Laetitia, who turned out to be a musician. We discovered we both had the wish to somehow combine the Journey with music. Brandon Bays, the founder of the Journey, is friends with Deva Premal and Miten and she uses chants from their CDs during Journey retreats, so live chanting would be a logical next step. That’s how we started out.
Standig on stage has always felt very natural to me and thus I’ve done an education in drama. Part of that education was musical expression, which is an improvisational way of working with music. Quite naturally I took up a leading position within that improvisational groups. When I was working as a school teacher I saw a man on the market square making music with children. That really hit me and I thought: ‘this is what I want to do‘. So I went to the conservatory and learned how to play various instruments. I discovered that I have the ability to tune into people’s energy and express it musically, which was very helpful in working with physically and mentally disabled children that could not express themselves verbally. When I discovered the Journey I learned how to really be in connection. That’s also where I teamed up with Peter Thijssens, as we share a common interest in music in combination with spirituality and personal development.
Music was our first love
Though coming from different backgrounds, music has always been an integral part of both our lives. We like to share our musical creations with as many people as possible, so they may discover what joy music can bring, especially chanting. What a joy it is to see people get moved and opening their hearts and getting reconnected to the Divinity which they are!
We have 3 main goals:
- making live chanting an integral part of the Journey curriculum
- touring Europe with our chant group and bringing joy to the people
- giving masterclasses and seminars combining music, in depth therapy and spiritual practices
All in service of the awakening of mankind to the Divine Beings we’ve always been!
Music as a path towards Self liberation
We both have walked different paths, yet our love for music and Self liberation is what binds us. Although our working together only started in 2017 we both have a long history in music, theatre, education, psychology, introspection, meditation and/or spirituality. Music is an integral part of our seminars and we look upon music as a way to set you free.
Because we are total opposites characterwise we can work with people with an introvert nature as well as with people with an extravert nature.
Since we’ve joined forces we played at a lot of Journey graduate meetings for groups up to 10 people. In 2018 we played for a larger crowd at the Authentic Greatness seminar.
Why would you come to our events:
if you like singing
if you want to liberate your Self
if you like music and spirituality
if you like being in the company of fellow lovers of music and spirituality
if you want to have a really really good time
or if you're afraid to sing and want to get over it
if you have fear of exposure and want to get over it
if you like chanting CDs and you want to the real deal
if you want to experience the power of mantra
Enjoying live chanting
A chanting session takes about 2 hours, including an introductory meditation and staying in silence afterwards. We play our own compositions along with chants from other people like Deva Premal & Miten, Byodo, Henry Marshall, Satyaa & Pari, Sacha AllStarrs, Snatam Kaur and the Singing Buddhas.
Chanting is always in the here and now. Every time we play a chant is is different, driven by Divine Inspiration in combination with the group energy at that very moment. Thus there may be variations in tempo, dynamic, harmonies and such.
It is a promise that you will feel a lot better after a chanting session; it raises your vibration.
